WATT - MIG-Connect for “Plug and play”

While the connection of electrical machines commonly still is made by using classical terminal boards nowadays an increased demand on modern connector solutions can be observed. WATT supported this demand by developing the MultI-pluG – Connect (MIG-Connect) on its 7WA motors.

Background:
Due to requirements from users in the “Automation and Drives” – branch a wide area of connectors has been developed in the past. Long time those connectors were not very popular in the motor market because of the seriously higher price compared to the terminal-board. But since the focus came to reduce down-times on maintenance and failure cases as well as to optimize assembly time of components in the production line an ever increasing quantity of electric motors is assembled with modern connecting devices. Especially favorable on smaller frames as not only the power contacts but also all auxiliary devices (brake, thermal-protectors, space-heaters, etc) can be connected with one plug.

Main advantages :
- The final motor-winding-connection can be made on the mating connector side, so
there’s no need to stock pre-connected motors.
- Compact space saving design.
- A replacement of the motor can be done by a mechanic worker alone.
- By the use of mating connectors connection failures can be eliminated.
- Down-times will be shortened, so falling-off-costs are reduced drastically.

The MIG-Connect-System:
Due to the wide range of motor power and voltages it’s of course not possible to use one connector for all frames. Rated current and size has to be considered in detail. WATT Drive’s MIG-connect-system (see Tab.1) enables to have “Plug & Play” opportunity foralmost the whole EUSAS-motor-range.

* some powers require higher MIGs

As most applications of WATT Drives are related to heavy industry condition, all connector housings are from metal. For aggressive environment and EMI – conditions separate executions can be offered. Besides the motor-connector a variety of mating connectors are available.

MIG10 (see Fig. 1):

With 12PIN and ground this most compact plug enables to contact motors up to a rated current of 10 A with voltages up to 400/690 V and protection degrees up to IP67. Besides the power wires a variety of auxiliary wires can be connected as well. As option a plug coding (16 positions) can be supplied as well as Star- and Deltabridges for the mating connector.

MIG16 (see Fig. 2):

This MIG for mid-sized motors supports a max. current of 16 A at 500 V with 10PIN in total. In case a wider variety of auxiliary PINs are necessary a mixed holding can be offered (6PIN-16 A; 12PIN-aux.)

MIG40 (see Fig. 3):

To achieve all contacts do be connected with one plug a mixed holding of PINs has to be used in this case. 6PIN for 40 A at 400/690 V together with 12PIN auxiliary guarantees full contactability.

MIG100:
Due to the high rating up to 100 A at 725 V only the 3 power-PINs are wired to this biggest MIG-connect. Any auxiliary devices can be wired separately to a MIG10-connect. Both MIGs are directly assembled to the conventional terminal box.

The fact the EUSAS motor, being specially designed to be used worldwide on different mains is well known. Now with MIG-Connect this motor can be contacted very quick and easily to any application as well. MIG – EUrope, USA, ASia – a motor that really drives the world.
