Driving ON ICE! |

To illustrate the point about how tough the new IP65 Lenze smv AC vector drive is Lenze-ACTech International had a 0.75Kw unit frozen in ice before demonstrating its working abilities. The drive remained fully functioning at the launch running demos while encased in ice throughout the two-day International sales and technical conference held in the UK. The smv drive is part of a family of easy-to-use and easy-to-apply general purpose drives products distributed and supported by Lenze-ACTech International, part of the Lenze Group. The drive although it will work frozen in ice is intended for use in outdoor or washdown conditions where moisture is present such as food processing and HVAC applications. Most inverter drives are designed with vents in the case to aid cooling, they also employ external displays and controls that are only resistant to occasional splashes by neutral liquids - the smv however is designed to resist water ingress from direct (low pressure) water jets. With a sealed integral heat sink, a compact IGBT and built-in overload protection the smv is also able to stay cool. The smv vector drive delivers fast dynamic torque response, sophisticated auto-tuning and impressive low speed operation from a compact, low cost and simple to use package. The smv range is designed specifically for use in small motor applications where dynamic speed and torque control are required, such as conveyors, food production, packaging lines and HVAC systems. Sensorless vector control can be achieved with a drive that is extremely easy to commission and operate. A simple facia keypad and a choice of onboard parameter sets ensure that the basic control and set-up procedure can be completed in seconds. Amazingly the smv IP65 range of drives also feature the programmable EPM chip common to the Lenze smd and PositionServo products, this allows OEMs to pre-program a drive simply by plugging the chip into an installed drive, or re-programmed in the field using just a replacement chip. The chip is located behind a secure cover on the SMV IP65 model. Smv drives are available in the power range 0.25kW to 2.2kW for single-phase supplies and up to 7.5kW for 3 phase supplies. Standard operating modes include standard and enhanced V/Hz (constant and variable) operation, vector speed control and vector torque control. Motor calibration is via an auto-tune function and a range of communication options are available in order to integrate the smv into a wider machine or plant control network, DeviceNet, RS-485, LECOM, CANopen, Ethernet/IP and Profibus are all available from launch with others being introduced soon. Various options are available including a standard range of footprint filters, remote external keypads and dynamic braking units.
